![]() In terms of toughness, the Galaxy S22 Ultra wins points for its IP68 water and dust resistance rating, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 can only manage IPX8. The Galaxy S22 Ultra goes with a more traditional hole-punch notch. Samsung has gone with an improved under-display option, so you can’t really see it in general use. One way in which the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is more subtle than its brother is with its selfie notch. The S22 Ultra is big, but you can at least manage it singlehanded if necessary. It is certainly a tablet, however, and is not easy to use one-handed. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is taller than the Z Fold 4, and when the Fold is open, it is a thinner tablet than the Ultra. If that doesn't sound like the way you want to use a phone, stick with the S22 Ultra. We use it in a pinch, then open the phone when we need to get real work done. The Fold display is far too narrow to use regularly. The front display on the Z Fold cannot compare to the massive screen on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. From the barely-workable Galaxy Fold, Samsung has persisted in making subtle improvements until we have the refined, durable, very usable Galaxy Z Fold 4. That's the other face of the Samsung coin. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a wild design made possible by bleeding edge technology. Ever since the Galaxy S6, Samsung phones have been creeping this design direction. The Ultra is the culmination of Galaxy S design, with curving edges, an uninterrupted back panel, and even a hidden S Pen silo. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy S22 Ultra sit at opposing ends of the Samsung design pendulum. Obviously I know I will be losing some RAM in this switch but I am far from a power user so 8GB should be enough and while I will miss the 10X optical zoom it's just so nice to have a smaller phone again, plus in my limited comparisons I have found the S22+'s primary camera to be more reliable than the S21 Ultra's when it comes to focus and color reproduction.Īnyway I just wanted to post this for anyone else that might have a similar opportunity as Best Buy is offering the same "free" swap if you have a S21 Ultra and while a few months ago I would have thought it was a major downgrade to go from the S21 Ultra to the S22+ I now think it's more of a lateral move of trading some RAM and a 10X sensor for a much thinner and lighter phone where the other screen and camera differences are barely noticeable.(Image credit: TechRadar / Stephen Lambrechts) In fact I believe the S22+'s gets brighter when in super bright sunlight. You can imagine my surprise though when I find out how great the phone feels in the hand and most shockingly that I could barely tell the difference between the S22+'s FHD display and the S21 Ultra's QHD one. So flash forward to this week and Best Buy is currently running a promotion where they allowed me to swap a Z Flip 3 for a S22+ and I only had to pay a small amount of sales tax ($29 to be exact) so I figured I would take advantage just for higher resale value later on. The only thing I didn't love about it was the bulk which is why I returned the S22 Ultra after 4 days of use as it was even bulkier than the S21 Ultra and without having a use for the S-Pen it was hard to justify the upgrade. ![]() ![]() The cameras are great and of course the screen is top notch. So I have been using an S21 Ultra since it was released last year and have been quite happy with it all around.
